Army Medical Soldier Powers All-Army Women’s Softball Team to Championship

SEMBACH, Germany — An Army physical therapy technician stationed in Germany helped power the U.S. Army Women’s Softball Team to a first-place finish at the 2026 Armed Forces Women’s Softball Championships held recently in Oklahoma City.

Sgt. Summer Feathers, a 68F physical therapy technician assigned to the U.S. Army Health Clinic Stuttgart, joined fellow Soldier-athletes from across the globe to claim the Department of Defense’s top softball title at the USA Softball Hall of Fame Complex.

The annual tournament, part of the Armed Forces Sports program, gathers top athletes from the Army, Navy (including the Coast Guard), and Air Force (including the Space Force) to promote fitness, competition, and service pride.

Feathers, a native of Altoona, Pennsylvania, who enlisted in 2021, brings a lifelong athletic pedigree to the sport.

"I played baseball with metal and wooden bats starting when I was 5 years old," Feathers said. "I started playing competitive softball in high school at age 16 in 10th grade. After playing softball all three years in high school, I continued playing at the college level for Penn State University."

Her military athletic journey accelerated two years ago when she sought higher competition.

"In 2024 I learned that the Army offered a higher level of competitive sports, and I wanted to challenge myself beyond unit softball," Feathers said. "I applied in the spring and was selected for team tryouts that summer. I gave it my all and earned a spot on the All-Army women’s softball team, giving me the opportunity to represent the Army and compete against other military branches during the Armed Forces National Championship tournament at the Hall of Fame softball stadium in Oklahoma City."

Feathers has now competed on the All-Army team for three consecutive years, amassing one silver and two gold medals.

"It has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my Army career," she said.

For Feathers, being on the winning team carries deep personal and professional significance.

"Being selected for the All-Army Women’s softball team is a great honor," Feathers said. "It gives me the opportunity to represent the United States Army at a high level while competing alongside some of the Army’s best athletes. It also reflects discipline, dedication, and teamwork that I have developed throughout my brief military career."

Defending the title demanded rigorous sacrifice both on and off the field.

"Winning the gold medal means that all the hard work, dedication, and sacrifices I put in during the off-season and throughout the season paid off," Feathers added. "Being able to accomplish that with my team and earning our second consecutive gold medal makes it even more meaningful. It’s a reflection of the commitment and teamwork we put into it all season long."

Feathers noted that her civilian and military athletic experiences continue to enhance her duties as a Soldier.

"Playing sports taught me how to stay disciplined, work as a team, handle pressure, and keep pushing myself when things get difficult," Feathers said. "It helped me grow more confident, build lasting relationships, and become a better Soldier and teammate. I thank God for giving me the opportunity and the abilities to play at this level and represent the United States Army on and off the field as a Soldier athlete."
